The double Olympic gold-winning oarsman put in a back-breaking eight-hour stint to become the first person in living memory to successfully cross New Zealandâs Foveaux Strait.
James â" who suffered a horrific brain injury during a cycling accident in the US in 2010 which left him with memory loss and a short temper â" will be seen making the crossing in tomorrowâs final episode of Worldâs Toughest Expeditions With James Cracknell.
He single-handedly tackled strong winds and brutal waves as he crossed from Ruapuke Island to New Zealandâs South Island to investigate what sailors from the SS Dundonald had to endure when it was wrecked in the area more than 100 years ago.
He rowed non-stop for six hours to reach what he hoped would be the end of his journey.
But after getting close to a rocky beach, the current became too strong and he was forced to head for the harbour in the town of Bluff.
This added another two hours to the ordeal through a notoriously volatile weather system.
The final episode of the four-part series is screened on the Discovery Channel tomorrow at 9pm.
