Hopeful Engelbert Humperdink is a Eurovision flop

Hopeful Engelbert Humperdink is a Eurovision flop

In an ominous development the veteran crooner’s Eurovision entry, Love Will Set You Free, is languishing at No76.

Just 3,442 people bought the ballad despite a huge publicity campaign and airplay on radio and TV.

This follows a similarly woeful 4,811 copies sold in the first week, which saw it enter the charts at No64.

Things have got so bad for the Leicester-born singer that even Irish Eurovision rivals Jedward felt sorry for Britain and have thrown their weight behind our song. They were spotted clutching a Get Behind The Hump poster at a pre-show event in Baku, Azerbaijan, at the weekend.

An insider said: “This is a disastrous start to Engelbert’s campaign.

“He’s a great guy and full of beans but Britain is not getting behind him. If Brits can’t even get behind it, what hope is there?

“The last thing you need is a rival to start blowing your trumpet. It looks desperate.”

Engelbert will perform first at the Eurovision final on Saturday night.

He said recently he was desperate to bring home the Eurovision prize, saying: “I am going to go out there and do my thing.

“I hope the fans I have accumulated across Europe over the years are going to vote for me and I can bring that trophy home.”
