If you’re a woman who always has her nose in a book don’t hold it so close â€" it could weaken your eyesight.
Women tend to hold reading material closer to their eyes than men and this may be why they need reading glasses earlier, a study has suggested.
The researchers found no difference in the ability of men and women to focus on objects at near distance.

This suggests that the reason women need bifocals earlier may be down to other factors, including having shorter arms, which means they hold things closer, raising their odds of things appearing blurred as they age.
Writing in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, scientists from the University of California said women’s need for reading glasses earlier was ‘likely due to differences in preferred reading distances or arm length as women tend to hold reading materials closer than men do.’
The researchers were studying presbyopia â€" the loss of near vision that occurs with age.

The deterioration results from the stiffening of the eyeball’s lens, which makes zooming in on close objects more difficult, leading to blurred vision and the need for reading glasses.
The researchers added: ‘These findings could impact global vision care in multiple ways.
‘The findings reinforce the need for presbyopia correction programmes for women â€" a group that often has greater unmet vision needs in developing countries.
‘It also points out that presbyopia is a multi-faceted problem and requires solutions that are tailored to each individual.’

Right, what this poorly written and badly researched article fails to mention is what presbyopia actually is. It is something that happens to EVERYONE; the lens inside your eye that stretches fatter to focus things close up becomes less stretchy. Those with a shorter working distance than their friends will start to have to push things away from them sooner in order to focus it better. This research is not news, it is twisting of already known facts. short sighted people will be able to remove their glasses to see close up (though not the case for all), long sighted people rely on their glasses more (or see worse without them) and those with "perfect" vision get annoyed at needing reading/bifocal/varifocal glasses.

PLEASE DM the word closely is an adverb - it thus refers to the verb which is 'to hold' The headline should say that women hold books too CLOSE. We still, nearly, speak English in this country - can we let the americans use their poor syntax and such while we stick to English.

Womens eyesight suffering from holding books too close? Don't make me laugh. Their eyesight is being affected by constantly peering at their cellphones

I hold books close to my eyes because I am near-sighted. I don't need glasses to read. If I held books farther away I would need to get reading glasses. Why should I get glasses to read with if I don't need glasses to read with? This study doesn't make any sense.

Well if I could afford a pair of over-priced rip-off glasses, I wouldn't need to hold books so close, would I?!
