Little Eli Alfred Michael Evans was born weighing 7lb 13oz at 4.52am this morning.

Delighted Chris, 46, tweeted early today: "Eli Alfred Michael Evans says hi ! Can't wait to join you all out there. A nice quiet first day in and then I'll be right with you. Xxx."

He later added: "Thx so much for al the twitter Eli love. It's gonna be one hell of a wekend !! Pint ! After The One Show of course. Xxxx."

Chris had been due to present his Radio 2 Breakfast Show from the Hay Festival this morning.

But shortly after arriving in Hay-on-Wye, Wales, Chris received the news that his golfer wife was in labour and dashed home again in a helicopter.

He tweeted last night: "Was at Hay. No longer. Back in the air. On the way to Baby Drop! Good luck with the show guys and well done to all the 500 Words finalists x."

The One Show’s Alex Jones had to step in and host the programme from the town’s literary festival, announcing the winners of the station’s 500 Words children’s story-writing contest.

Evans phoned in to the show to share his joy with listeners after the 52-minute labour.

And he said the birth was so swift that his wife had been unable to have an epidural as she had requested.

He revealed: “She said ’I think it’s happening’ so the nurses came in. It was just a two-push birth, a fast-track delivery - the baby popped out. She doesn’t mess about.”

Getting in the literary spirit, he told listeners: “Once upon a time there was a silly radio DJ who went to Wales when his wife was four days overdue with their second child, hoping both mummy and baby might hang on until he returned.

“But of course he was completely wrong as usual and two hours after he arrived there on Thursday evening, he had to beat a hasty retreat to get back to London in time, which he did - just about - to witness the birth of 7lb 13oz Eli Alfred Michael Evans, born at 4.52am.”

Chris and Natasha, who wed in 2007 after they met when they were partners in a celebrity golf tournament, already have a son Noah, three.

Chris is also dad to daughter Jade, 25, from a previous relationship.
