Google launches Google TV allowing viewers to use apps for Android phones and watch thousands of movies

In partnership with electronics giant Sony, it is releasing a £200 set-top box which allows viewers to use apps created for Google’s Android phones and tablets.

Google also says Play Store â€" its version of Apple’s iTunes and App Store â€" has hundreds of thousands of movies.

It expects firms such as Sky to launch dedicated apps.

The system includes a version of Google’s Chrome web browser specially designed for TVs.

And the dual-sided remote has a touch-pad for cursor control on one side, and a full keyboard for emails and web searches on the other.

The set-top box is available for pre-order from today, and will be in shops from July 16.
